Mini Meet 4 was due to be held on Sunday 28 February. This gala will be postponed until Sunday 21 March 2010.
Sorry for any inconvenience caused.
Whilst for many it was ‘Hearts and Roses’ over the weekend of 12th – 14th February, that was not the case for the young folk from the ULSTER Region of swimming who spent their weekend ‘splashing and dashing’ with Mums, Dads, Granny’s and Granddad’s all postponing their plans to support the children.
A full weekend of swimming took place at Lisburn Leisureplex which was the setting for the ULSTER Valentines Graded 4 Gala. The ULSTER meet consists of three competitions in one under the new format; Potential Olympian Series, Age Group Superstars and Stroke Development Galas where children get the opportunity to compete, register times, achieve new personal bests, make qualifying times for larger competitions and collect some medals along the way.
The Lisburn City Swimming Club got the chance to do just that….. A strong team arrived on masse to compete over the three days on home territory. Some of the children were only swimming part of the weekend, and for others it was a full weekend of competition to set down markers for the rest of the season. Strong racing took place, healthy competition was in abundance and super performances along the way…..Personal bests were added to, qualifying times for ULSTER and IRISH competitions were achieved and a tally of medals collected.
Friday night saw the Distance swimming, racing for the ‘Brave Hearts’…..Two events took place, 800 & 1500 Metre Freestyle, no easy task for any swimmer, but our young folk were up for the challenge. Rachel Smyth recovering from injury was on fine form in the 800 Freestyle and broke the 10 minute barrier with a time of 9.57.71, a new personal best for this young lady and securing a 1st place. Her team mates Jemma Bingham(15) and Katie Reid(16) also secured 1st places with superb performances. 16 year old David Thompson who returned last weekend from the Dave McCullagh Memorial Long Course Gala in Limerick having had a good mid season performance took on the 1500M and lifted 1st place in a new time of 17.26.45. 16 year old Ben Carey got 2nd in 1500 Free with a new time of 18.09.24. In the 12 year old girls 800M event it was a 1, 2, 3 for Lisburn with Chloe Richards, Natasha Pollock and Hannah Watson. The 12 year old Lisburn boys not to be outdone by the girls continued with a 1, 2 3, Cameron McAteer, Callum Taylor and Alex Walker all registering times of just over 21 minutes. A special mention also goes to Alexandra Hunter, Zoe Smyth, Hannah Taylor, Peter Sands, Matthew Walker, and Nathan Jones who went the distance………all getting a 1st, 2nd or 3rd placing, and to Lauren Gourley, Rachel McMurray, Paige McKeown and Lucy Scott who had strong swims with personal bests achieved.

Whilst the junior swimmers were competing their first Teletots meet of the season, a team of nine swimmers from the Performance squad made the long journey down to Limerick last weekend to compete in the Dave McCullagh Memorial meet and in a weekend of quality swimming returned with a brace of bronze medals.
This swim meet, held at the impressive National 50m pool at the University of Limerick, heralds the start of the long course season and is always used to gauge progress and lay down some early season long course best times. The competition is dedicated to the memory of one of Irish swimming’s most outstanding administrators who despite terminal illness was pivotal in the construction of both the Limerick pool and the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin
It is fair to say that in an ‘open’ championships such as this our swimmers are still some way off regular podium places but to achieve qualification for a final or ‘B’ final against more senior and significantly more experienced opposition was a major step towards future successes
The individual bronze medal was secured by Club Captain Katie Reid in the 50m backstroke in a time of 31.56s. Already an established member of Swim Ireland’s 2012 Katie sparkled at this meet and was involved in a number of finals finishing frustratingly just out of the medal places. Nonetheless her 4th place in both the 100m & 200m backstroke as well as setting a new pb of 2:31.61 for the 200m individual medley were all sound markers for the season to come
Following an enforced lay off due to injury, Bethany Carson made a welcome return to the competition pool and it was clear to see that she is making great progress towards full fitness. Swimming a reduced programme she secured three finals berths and was unlucky not to medal finishing 4th in both the 100m freestyle and the 200m IM. Also making a return from injury David Thompson swam close to his pb qualifying for a couple of ‘B’ finals in the 50 & 100m freestyle and will be pleased by setting a new pb of 2:28.56 in the 200m IM. Both swimmers can look forward with new optimism for the remainder of the season.
Rachel Smyth and Jemma Bingham qualified for ‘B’ finals and secured new pbs in the 200m freestyle and 200m backstroke respectively. Rachel finished in third place shaving 2 seconds off her previous best in 2:17.66 whilst Jemma lowered her pb by half a second to 2:37.05. The quartet of City girls, Bethany, Jemma, Rachel and Katie excelled in the 200m medley relay where despite competing against considerably more senior teams they nailed Lisburn’s other bronze medal.
With nearly every swimmer including Olan Derry, Kourosh Abelehkoob and Sarah O’Callaghan recording sound new long course personal best times in several of their swims, Coach Andy Reid was pleased with the results and has a sound platform to build upon for the remainder of the season.
Lisburn City v Banbridge
A New Season a New Team…... Lisburn City Swimming Club started their Teletots campaign at Home on Sunday evening under new Captains’ Zoe Smyth and Cameron McAteer.
Their first meet was against newly promoted Banbridge who had joined Division 1. With lots of trepidation the young swimmers entered into the unknown but were up for the challenge and prepared for the night ahead.
First up was the Medley Relay events, and Lisburn in all four races got 1st place earning full points. Some super swimming took place with these relay teams and Lisburn were just too strong for Banbridge. Group D swimmers made up of Zoe Smyth, Alex Walker, Alexandra Hunter and Cameron McAteer touched in a super fast time of 1.06.87.
Then it was time for the individual events starting with Backcrawl. In the A Group boys a new swimmer to the team Jamie Allison secured 1st place in his swim with a great time of 23.35 followed closely by squad mate Nathan Doak who got a 2nd place. The Butterfly…………Going into the Fly event Lisburn were overall ahead by 24 points. Our youngest swimmers, Nadine Pollock and Cameron Loan had to be happy with 2nd place. The B Group girls dominated their event with a 1, 2 from Rachel Bethel and Rebecca Clarke, super swimming from these two young girls, whilst Andrew Edgar got 1st with a time of 20.86. The ‘99 girls were equally as strong Amy Seawright and Rebecca Sands with a 1..2.. again, full points for Lisburn . Keelan Logan had a strong fly race and picked up 1st with a time of 18.01. In the D Group, Lisburns swimmers were strong collecting vital points for their team. Zoe Smyth got a 2nd place in a time of 16.50 and a new personal best and her training partner Alex Walker dominated his event in a time of 15.74 a new personal best for him. Jonny Stewart secured 2nd place points with a time of 19.46 and a new personal best. Again a close event with only 4 points separating the teams in the Fly event. However, the gap was increasing between the two competing teams and going into the Freestyle event, the scores were Lisburn 159 – Banbridge 121.
The Freestyle event saw strong swimming from the Lisburn team in all of the age Groups, 1st place went to Nadine Pollock, Rachel Bethel, Amy Seawright, Keelan Logan, Alexandra Hunter and Cameron McAteer and many personal bests were recorded. 2nd place and important points for the Lisburn side were taken by Rebecca Woods, Daurish Abelekhoob, Neil Saulters and Alex Walker.
Going into the last event and on home turf Lisburn secured 1st place in all of the Freestyle relays, strong performances by all these young kids. The visiting ’98 team were no match for the home side made up of Zoe Smyth, Alex Walker, Alexandra Hunter and Cameron McAteer. They again swam a superb event breaking the minute in a time of 59.65 some 6 seconds ahead of their competitors.
It was all over, Lisburn’s first TELETOTS meet of the season, a valiant performance by Banbridge, but Lisburn were just too strong for the visitors, and the final score was Lisburn 232 – Banbridge 168. Banbridge were gracious in defeat and it was a pleasure for Lisburn to host the visitors who are new to the Division.
Well done to the team……
