The Coaches

Andrew Reid – Head Coach

Our mission is to develop a positive swimming club environment in which swimmers can reach their potential as athletes and as individuals.

I believe a disciplined but fun approach to coaching is most appropriate for swimmers 12yrs & under, to provide them with direction and the skills necessary to develop their swimming. To gradually help the swimmers develop self-responsibility, self-determination and self-discipline as they mature.

We always focus on the performance process rather than winning or losing. Swimmers should receive constructive criticism whenever possible and should always be praised for giving 100% whether they win or lose both in training and competition. I believe in a multi-skilled approach to training for all age group swimmers and on frequency of training rather than intensity. Frequency of training at all levels is essential if the swimmers wish to experience success. The program should be “athlete centred” and “coach driven”.

I believe that technique is the most important component of swimming fast at all levels and should never be ignored. I believe in constant reinforcement of good skills and hard work. Overall, swimmers should enjoy their experiences in the pool and I will aspire to facilitate them in reaching their goals.

Mark Cummins – Junior Development Coach

I want to create a foundation that includes proper skill development and the development of self-esteem. Creating a sound developmental program will instill in children a love of swimming.

This is a competitive sport, and the kids will feel good about themselves when they are challenged to new personal bests, have some setbacks, and fight harder to become even better.

This isn’t just about swimming…this is prepping kids to be successful in life! I believe you need five ingredients – Passion, Drive, Desire, Enthusiasm and Commitment, not just for swimming but also in life.

Stan Sheppard – Coach

As a coach of young swimmers my aim is to provide an environment which promotes the learning and development of skills and technique for competitive swimming. At this level I realise the importance of fun, learning and discipline, and my aim is to promote these skills at this key stage in their development.

As an assistant coach of senior swimmers, my aim is to provide assistance to the Head Coach. In doing this I will promote the philosophy of the club and the importance of dedication and the rewards of hard work to the achievement of long and short term goals.

  • Coach Andy’s Tip of the Month

Habit is a intersection of knowledge, skill and desire. Knowledge of what to do and why, skill is the how to do it, and the desire or motivation to want to do it. Excellence is therefore a habit.
